Crafting A Resume

0

In a constantly changing marketplace it is important to stay up to date with the latest trends.  When you apply for a job, you’re much more likely to be successful in an interview if you tailor your resume to each position for which you apply.  This Wall Street Journal article discusses the importance of knowing what is and what is not appropriate when crafting a resume.  Knowing your audience could be the difference between getting the job and having your resume skipped over.

WSJ : How to Make a Résumé That Works

The Importance of Body Language

How would you describe your body language during interviews? Good or bad? If you haven’t given it much thought, then now may be a good time. Your overall presentation counts, including what you movements project to the interviewer.

When you’re looking for that next job, a great resume is a good thing to have. It’s also highly beneficial to have the support of people familiar with your work.

Middle-aged Unemployment

0

It’s no secret there is serious issue with the high rates of joblessness among young people. But there is an equally abiding problem with unemployment amongst the middle-aged, reports The Wall Street Journal. There are 3.5 million middle-aged American currently unemployed, with 39% of them being jobless for more than a year. These long-term ramifications have been devastating, especially since its usually takes older workers more time to find a new job.

Older workers suspects their resumes get tossed aside for younger workers with lower salary expectations and savvier technical skills. To prevent unnecessary discrimination regarding your age, it is important to make sure your resume is age-proofed. A few simple ways to achieve this is by including only work experience related to the position you’re applying for; creating a digital presence and listing your LinkedIn profile on your resume; and removing any unnecessary figures, such as fax numbers and outdated years.

Heilbron Awards

The recent Heilbron Awards gave recognition to organizations and businesses exemplifying the “pay it forward” spirit that contributes to the success of others in the community.  I am proud to accept this award on behalf of Manpower San Diego. I would also like to thank the Rotary Club 33 of San Diego and San Diego Business Journal for their continued support.

Employment Outlook Survey Q3 Results

0

Manpower recently published its quarterly Employment Outlook Survey, with its results revealing a positive hiring growth for the upcoming quarter. The survey covers more than 18,000 U.S. employers across 13 industries, and measures employers’ intentions to increase or decrease the number of employees in their workforce during the following quarter.

The results bring especially good news for the San Diego job market. San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos employers are expected to hire at a strong pace from July to September, with 19% of the companies interviewed planning to hire more employees. For those looking for a new job or career change, prospects appear best in Durable Goods Manufacturing, Non-Durable Goods Manufacturing, Transportation & Utilities, Wholesale & Retail Trade, Professional & Business Services, Education & Health Services, and Leisure & Hospitality. Trade Skills in Demand

0

Last week Manpower Group released the results of its annual Talent Shortage Survey which assesses the impact of talent  shortages on the global labor market. For the 2012 Survey, Manpower Group researched the views of more than 38,000 employers and found that 49% are experiencing difficulty filling positions within their organizations. Yet, despite these available jobs, unemployment continues to remain at an all time high.

I addressed this conundrum in a recent U-T San Diego article by suggesting the problem isn’t a lack of workers, rather it’s a lack of workers with the right skills. While the skills you develop should depend on your interests and career goals, it’s also important to look at the skills that will be useful in landing a job. The survey found that the top three candidates most in demand are Skilled Trades, Engineers and IT Staff. You can check out the full results of the survey here:

More Weak Hiring Expected

0

The soon to be released jobs report for May is expected this Friday. It’s also expected that it will not be the ray of hope some had hoped for. Use metrics such as this to understand that while maintaining a strong, repetitious strategy for your search also means that patience will be key in knowing that success will not happen overnight. Use this time to continue to get to know new people. You don’t always need to have an agenda when meeting casually with a contact. This article in Yahoo! Finance talks a bit about the upcoming report.

Truth In Your Resume

Truth in resumes has been a hot topic of late — particularly, in the big corporate realm. But ensuring the accuracy of credentials doesn’t just apply to executives like former Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson, it applies to everyone.
