Has NAFTA helped or hurt San Diego?
UT San Diego recently asked me the question “Has NAFTA, on balance, delivered more positives than negatives economically to San Diego and Tijuana?”
I say yes. It has been a model for the US, Canada, our second largest trading partner and Mexico, our third, to work together cooperatively using each country’s strengths. In this very competitive world trade market companies have to have the flexibility to get products and talents wherever they can most cost effectively find them. In order to keep our economy functioning effectively we need to try new trade policies and agreements and keep current with the way the world really works. NAFTA should be declared a big success and now we need to move forward lowering as many barriers to trade as we possibly can.
