Choosing The Right Profile Photo

In an age where “selfie” is now considered a real word, (Hah, I’m not kidding, look it up) there are many online platforms and profiles that require a photo.  Particularly in a job search, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

 

1. Always have a profile photo.

There are a lot of people on the internet these days and there is a good chance that there is going to be more than one “Tom Jones” with a LinkedIn, Facebook, etc..  People searching for you need to know which Tom Jones profile they are trying to connect with.  Make sure you always have a photo.

 

2. Use a recent photo

I know you want to use the best photos of yourself to make you look good, but if that photo is from 10 years ago, it’s time to get a new one.  You don’t want to mislead people.  It’d be really awkward to show up to a meet and greet or an interview and have parties not recognize one another because you had a really old photo.

 

3. Be the only subject in the photo

I get it, you love your family, you love your dog, and you love being outdoors.  It’s great, but you should be the subject of your photo.  You should also make sure that your face is clearly visible and in focus.

 

4. Dress appropriately

Never post a photo of yourself working out, at the beach, or at a bar.  Appear as you would in a business meeting.

 

5. Smile 🙂

You want to look inviting and friendly in your photo.  That being said, make sure your smile is natural and not a big fake “cheeeeeese” smile.  Smile like you would introducing yourself to a potential employer.  Head up, confident and self-assured.

 

6. Avoid using the company logo

Don’t use the company logo unless you are the owner or founder of the company.  People can, and will learn about the company from your “about” section.  If they are taking the time to search for you, they’ll have better luck if they can see a photo of YOU!
